People taking flight, as a result of experiencing oppression or out of a deep yearning for freedom, are recurring symbols in my work. They’re often seen growing wings, or metamorphosing into winged creatures. In this illustration, however, I wanted to depict the return of someone who had once left her land and people. 

Here is Cloud Woman, protector of her people and land, having returned after a long absence that spanned generations. She is part of the landscape, able to move freely through it, and has come to be known as its guardian. The illustration captures the moment after her return, with descendants of her followers- children, elders, animals- rejoicing, marching with her, as she glides serenely across the sky. I like to imagine she is not only here to stay, but will protect her land and people for eons to come. The mountains stand as silent witnesses, aglow with the joy of seeing Cloud Woman again, older and wiser.
