Title: Discovery

Artists: Shreya Pullela

To someone who has been divorced from their culture, taking the time to learn about your heritage can feel exciting and exhilarating but it can also be confusing and sometimes leave you lost. I think it’s almost like stumbling into a cave, weaving your way in and out of the tunnels, it can be confusing but maybe, you will discover a world unlike anything you’ve seen before. It might be intimidating and it might be unfamiliar but I must believe that it’s a journey worth taking. In this illustration, my character comes across a massive, seemingly ancient painting in an abandoned cave, leaving her with more questions than answers but also with a message left by the people that came before her.

I’m a 19 year old digital artist living in California, USA. As an Indian living in America, I find that one of the best ways to keep in touch with my roots is through the appreciation of the artforms of my motherland. I like to create illustrations that combine elements of South Asian culture and artforms with my inclination towards bright colors and interest in fashion. I started drawing digitally when I entered high school six years ago and discovered a supportive community of artists among my classmates and since then, art has become an integral part of my life. I am currently a sophomore undergrad at UMass Amherst studying psychology and although art isn’t my main focus in college, I’m involved with several artist groups and communities and I sometimes sell my art at campus markets.
